Capturing an Expressive Dog Portrait with Kathleen Denis
Whether you want to paint your own pet or someone else’s, there’s no better way to celebrate their love and companionship than to capture them on canvas.
In this workshop you will learn how to break down the basic structure and shape of the pet’s common anatomy such as the nose, eyes, mouth, and fur, along with capturing the dog’s unique personality. While learning to paint a dog portrait, you will also discover what brushes and paints to use, the painting process, and color harmony, with painterly, expressive brushstrokes.
Day 1 – Learn, sketch and paint the Dog’s anatomy
Day 2 – Paint a Dog from a photo provided by the instructor.
Day 3 – Paint a Dog from your own photo.

Kathleen Denis is known for capturing sun-drenched light in her contemporary-impressionistic style paintings, whether painting scenes of island life, old, charming towns, inviting gardens or adorable doggies. Presently living in Palm Beach Shores, she was born in Miami, grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, and spent much time in the Florida Keys and Bahamas, which greatly influenced her use of subject matter and colorful style.
Kathleen’s love of art began with lessons at the age of four, and graduated from the University of Miami, with a BFA degree in Graphic Design, while continuing to passionately study, paint in plein air and studio, teach, and win awards.
Her art is licensed by leading manufacturers found on numerous home décor products internationally, Prints can be purchased online, at HomeGoods and Bed, Bath & Beyond, while her original paintings are acquired in galleries, exhibits, plein air events, and on her website at www.kathleendenis.com.

The Armory Art Center campus facilities include three buildings dedicated to art classes, a sculpture garden, and an interior tented courtyard.
The Armory Art Center provides art classes for students of all ages, exhibitions, art salons, lectures, and special events. Nearly 100 courses held in 12 state-of-the-art studios are offered including
- ceramics, photography & digital media, drawing, jewelry, painting, printmaking, textiles & fiber, and sculpture.
- Youth art classes and summer art camps are offered.
- Various exhibitions are hosted throughout the year in three galleries.
- The campus, located at 811 Park Place, West Palm Beach, at the south end of Howard Park, includes three buildings—the two former Palm Beach County National Guard Armory buildings and the Young Artists Studio Facility.
